Carter County Schools is located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Carter County, Tennessee. Carter County’s 348 square miles consists of mountains, the Watauga and Doe Rivers, and beautiful valleys that form the Appalachian landscape.
The Carter County School System contains schools from eight small communities: Biltmore, Butler, Central, Hampton, Pinecrest, Stoney Creek, Roan Mountain, and Valley Forge. Our district consists of 16 schools, 4,452 Students, 36 administrators, 420 teachers, and 462 paraprofessionals.
At Elizabethton City Schools (ECS), our community of 2,700 students, 220 educators, and 19 administrators collaborates daily to foster academic excellence and personal growth. In 2023, ECS proudly ranked within the top 25% of districts statewide in student academic achievement. This success reflects our commitment to providing exceptional education and support to every student.

Milligan is a Christ-centered liberal arts university in Johnson City, Tennessee, boasting a close-knit community, 355-acre picturesque campus, and over 100 majors, minors and other degree offerings.

Northeast State at Elizabethton campus was the first off-site educational facility to be opened by Northeast State. Opening in 1996 through the joint efforts of Carter County, Northeast State, and the First Tennessee Private Industry Council, it is located on the Stoney Creek Highway across from the Elizabethton Municipal Airport. The site provides enhanced access to the College?s programs and services for the citizens of Carter, Johnson, and Unicoi counties. Specialized courses in continuing education can be tailored to meet the needs of the community.
The Carter County Extension Office is part of the University of Tennessee Extension Service. UT Extension is a statewide educational organization and a partnership between the Carter County government, The University of Tennessee and the US Dept. of Agriculture. UT Extension brings research-based knowledge in agriculture, family and consumer sciences and 4-H youth development to individuals, families, and communities.
